CHAPTER 24

Balgard, the capital city of Nön, was strategically built high upon the west edge of the Stoney Shore. At Balgard, the vast cliff face located on the Great Southern Sea eventually dipped to sea level where a natural harbor was formed by three converging rivers. Like the ancient city of Babylon in earth's history, the growing city of Balgard used these rivers as both a path for commerce and a means of defense.

The Vale, to the northwest, was the longest and the widest of the rivers. It was born from Thunderfall, the powerful spring-fed waterfall that fed Shadowmeer, the deep black lake that watered the Oldewood, a forest of the Hrothi Clan in the heart of the northland. From there, it passed by the foothills of the Valde Mountains that separated the lush fertile lands of the capital region from the hostile Shadowlands of the northwest where the Dvergar Clan claimed its home.

From the mountain range, springs and creeks spilled into the Vale. The waters grew into a wide graceful river full of commerce and trade as the miles flowed ever southward to the sea where Balgard came to be. The river ran just west of the city and down into a natural harbor. When the city grew, it grew down to the water and around so that the rivers became inseparable from the city and the harbor, becoming a port of destination for all of Nön and those from across the sea.

The Vale saw more land than any other river in all of Nön, yet its smaller sister rivers, Brynne and the Silver River, laid claim to the heart of the southern lands where light was more plentiful and radiated greenhouses were more common. Brynne, the smallest, ran from the plains between the Valde Mountains in the north and the Silver Mountains in the southeast, from which the Silver River descended. Both were well travelled and prosperous with major roads running along their banks. Like their larger sister, the rivers flowed to Balgard and out to the sea, the Silver River to the south side while Brynne flowed through the center of the city.

They were on the Brynne road. Harper had learned this and the history of the three rivers as she sat draped over Knes' lap on top of his stallion. His arms held her steady against his chest. The battle scene was miles behind them.

After the remaining rebels fled and the fighting stopped, they had returned to the road. At the sight of the first dead body, she closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around Knes’ body, and pressed her face to his chest. The smell of blood grew stronger the closer they got to the road. Soon it filled her every breath. It hung in the air and mixed with the earthy smell of the forest and remnants of ash, a cocktail of good and evil that she didn't want to drink from. Covering her mouth and nose with a piece of her cloak was all she could do, but the horror was still there in her mind.
